Scripture Reading — 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. — 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Loving others includes encouraging one another. In Romans 12:7-8, Paul lists encouragement among the gifts of grace. When people accomplish a common objective together, all are encouraged. Fellow believers encourage one another to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

The Thessalonian Christians faced struggles and an uncertain future. Paul wrote to encourage them, reminding them of their faith and love and hope in Christ, all of which prepared them to be ready for the Lord’s return. And with these assurances they could keep encouraging one another and building each other up.

The gift of encouragement is important in our lives. Encouragement is a gift in the home, the workplace, the church—wherever we find ourselves. We can come alongside others and be there for one another. We can listen, comfort, console, affirm. It’s a way of living out the command to love one another.

Personal Example:  My daughter (Sam) went down with an ankle injury Thursday in the fourth set of a best of five high school volleyball game.  She is one of the captains on the team.  Her teamates were concerned/distracted/deflated.  They lost the fourth set.  Coach brought the team huddle to Sam before the final set.  I could see Sam encouraging the team.  Another player became more vocal than ever as the fifth set started.  The girls responded by jumping out to a big lead.  In the last few points, the other team bounced back and tied the set 12-12.  Coach called a timeout and again huddled the team around Sam sitting on the bench.  Sam later told me she focused on one player that had made a couple mistakes.  She encouraged her by saying your a good player and the team needs you NOW.  That girl made crucial plays that helped win the game 15-13.  Showing someone a little grace through encouragement can make a difference.

PRAYER by Bengay

NMM:  Bengay bear crawled into a spider web on the first round of work.  Better him than me or Inspector.  Either of us would have probably went into an arachnophobic spasm.

Kettle bell swings, side lunges and full sit-ups take a lot longer than i estimated.
