34 Pax took to the streets of Greenwood at the weekly Starbucks run. Movement across pavement was done by all at varying speeds and distances. During the COT – a special guest addressed the group.

The Thang: We ran. Some went fast, some went slow, all went somewhere.

After Nameorama, Countorama, and Announcements, the Pax heard from Dr. Carrie Elkins of the Elkins Institute. Dr. Elkins spoke in Greenwood last night about the services she and her institute provide for veterans of all service branches who are coping with PTSD. Dr. Elkins has developed a nationwide practice helping veterans who are struggling with this condition after serving their country. She founded the Institute to provide a way to fund her efforts for these veterans, which are provided at no cost to vets or active service members. Dr Elkins clearly has a heart and a passion for helping these men and women who struggle to cope with PTSD, and cannot find help for their condition through the military services. She has an excellent track record of success in treating PTSD sufferers and getting them back to their lives quickly and without disrupting their lives/careers. The Pax are encouraged to support the Elk Institute and their work.
One thing that struck YHC during Dr. Elkins’ presentation, was how she saw a need in the community she was serving, and stepped in to help. When this turned into an opportunity to help servicemen and women across the country, she again stepped up, and founded a non-profit to help her continue her work without sacrificing her ability to make a living in her chosen vocation. This is what leadership looks like, not ignoring problems, not avoiding responsibility, not giving up because there are obstacles to doing the work, but rather finding ways to do what is needed, serve those needing service, and still taking care of responsibilities of home and family. Sounds like we could all learn a lesson from this High Impact Woman. We did 22 merkins for a while to honor veterans who commit suicide every day, but it takes more than merkins sometimes. Dr. Elkins is someone who is going that extra mile.
