5 pax posted in the chilly gloom for #Hustle and sprint training.

This weeks edition of Hustle was disrupted a bit by the construction in and around the football field and subsequently the track.  YHC the night before, made the decision to take full advantage of the newly laid sod on the practice field, and communicated this as such to those that were concerned with how new of a shoe to wear.  This was a good thing…..the communication, not the use of the practice field. And so here it goes……

Disclaimer – Push yourself to and passed your limits, but don’t go far enough to hurt yourself.

COP – While waiting in the parking lot the chatter was about the temperature and how beautiful yesterday was and how cold it had gotten overnight.  When the clock struck 0515, the call was made to mosey to the practice field and begin running its perimeter as a 10min warm up.  Half way through the first lap, it became all too apparent that the field was wet, really wet with more than just dew.  It was then reasoned that maybe just maybe the sprinkler system had been used to ensure the aforementioned “new” sod was well hydrated.  Ooops!

The THANG – Seeing as how our shoes were already soaked, there seemed no legitimate reason for calling an audible to the thoroughly dry parking lot.  However, the final few laps of the warm up were carried out side line to side line near the driest section of the field.  This section would be the recipient of abuse for the remainder of the wo.

Sprints Side to Side – 8 min

Cool Down – 3 min

Sprints Goal to Goal – 8 min

Cool Down – 3 min

Z Sprints Goal to Cone to Cone to Goal – 8 min

Cool Down – 3 min

Sprints Cone to Cone – 2.5 min

The objective is to not only work the fast twitch muscles, but learn how to catch one’s breathe while continuing to run.  This is where the cool down period is important.  Instead of standing, arms raised sucking wind, it was stressed to run and focus on catching and controlling one’s breathing while in motion.

Naked ManMoleskin – The night before there was some chatter around XL and XXL for the OnB at the Fountainhead.  YHC tired to offer a “new and improved” XL that involved parking at the Fountainhead and running to the Shipyard to post at Hustle and then running back.  When asked for takers, only crickets could be heard.  That was just as well, because YHC would have had to hear some serious whining from those “road joggers” about cold wet feet.  It’s a different breed that brings the Hustle.  It was coined as a “2 min style.”  Those 2 min men never once complained about the fact that their shoes became supersaturated shortly after the workout began.  Apparently we are a different breed.  It was a great workout that had YHC’s phone die during the first set of sprints, “I swear I plugged it in.”  Tclaps to Slow Pitch for having his readily available, and fully charged no less!  Then there was a drive by shouting by Flossy and the other XL’ers.  This occurred while we were in, ahem, a cool down session.  Just incase anyone saw our pace.  I believe that the correct phrase was, “Crap!  Flossy’s 10k pace is faster than our sprint pace.  Dang!”  All in all, I’m truly grateful to the men that shook off the cold and posted.  We sweat together even with wet feet!
