Last August, a few of us guys who are not #runners decided to have an unofficial boot camp workout on Friday mornings instead of having a third run day. It started out as just doing the Murph workout, sometimes subbing out different movements. One regretful Friday, it was an our-long burpee AMRAP. #Yikes
We decided to add a little flavor to the pot and began doing different hero WODs every Friday. The “unofficial” workout started gaining some momentum and we made it an “official” workout. We called it REDFriday in honor of those heroes who were still serving this great nation. RED stands for Remember Everyone Deployed.
We strongly encourage all pax to wear red on Fridays at both REDFriday and Friday run group, #HillsAreAlive. Once upon a time, the entire group paid a 5 burpee penalty if a pax showed up wearing no red.
The goal is to raise awareness for the military, the fallen and the families of every sailor, marine, soldier and airman. That goal is definitely being met here in Greenwood.
LiteBrite designed a shirt for REDFriday because, hey, this is F3. It’s a free workout so we need lots of shirts. But he also had the great idea to ask the Gear Store if they would kindly donate a portion of the sale of the REDFriday shirts to an organization supporting those in uniform. The Gear Store readily agreed and we selected Navy-Marine Relief Society. This is a great organization that is directly involved in helping sailors and marines with whatever they may need.
I was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea when my grandmother passed away. NMCRS helped me foot the bill for a plane ticket to and from Sigonella, Italy so I could attend the funeral. My mother was a dedicated volunteer at the organization for many years.
You can read more about them HERE.
By purchasing one of these shirts, you will not only get some great swag, but you will also make a direct impact on the men and women who lay it all on the line day in and day out for our freedom. You won’t find a sweeter deal this side of terrorism.
But we are greedy folks down here in Greenwood and we are asking even more of you. We would like for every region to consider establishing their very own REDFriday workouts. What better way than to honor our heroes than by doing hero WODs on Fridays? We will be happy to provide you with a list of hero WODs we have already modified to fit the parameters of F3 (such as no barbell).
If starting a REDFriday workout is not feasible, then we humbly ask you to consider encouraging your pax to wear red every Friday in support of our freedom fighters. Anyone at any workout can also toss in 22 merkins to raise awareness for the 22 veterans who commit suicide daily. #22KILL
Whatever level of involvement you decide to have, all of us here in F3Greenwood appreciate all of you and your efforts to plant, grow and serve small men’s workout groups and your commitment to the invigoration of male community leadership.
For your convenience, the link to purchase the REDFriday shirts is below. Deadline is, appropriately, July 4.
