Devo: Dealing w/ Discouragement
This is a highlighted version of the message my Pastor fave this past Sunday morning. It comes from Haggai 2:1 – 9. I won’t read these verses, but they detail a message brought by Haggai to Jerusalem to encourage them to complete the rebuild of the Temple. Shirt version is the older people could remember the beauty of Solomon’s Temple and were discouraged because the rebuilt Temple was inferior.
The Pastor hit on 3 major causes of discouragement, and while these aren’t the only 3, they can be linked one way or another the root cause of most people’s discouragement.
1. A good memory of the wrong things. Instead of focusing on the new Temple and it’s potential, the elders had good memories of the original Temple and that created discouragement.
2. A bad memory of the right thing. This could be something as simple as looking at an up coming vacation but thinking about how much it will cost.
3. Playing the comparison game. The elders in Jerusalem were doing this with comparing Solomon’s Temple to the new Temple and we do this with many aspects of our life. Whether it be jobs, homes, or toys.
The 4 basic cures for discouragement:
1. We must let go. The elders needed to let go of Solomon’s Temple and accept the new Temple for what it was.
2. We must look up. Focus on God and search out his will. Do our dreams align with God’s dreams? If not we need to reevaluate our dreams.
3. We must look ahead. We shouldn’t dwell on the bad or the good of the past. Concentrate on what’s ahead.
4. We must get to work. In Haggai 2:4 God instructs us to “be strong… and work; for I am with you.”
Nothing worth having comes easy.
In the example above the elders only saw the new Temple’s physical characteristics and failed to see that the most important part of the Temple is God’s presence.
I’m not sure where this came from but it sounds good..
You do not determine a person’s greatness by their talent, wealth, or education. You determine a person’s greatness by what it takes to discourage them.

NMS:
* It was great having Mayhem post with us. He was instrumental in launching F3 in The Wood. Thanks for that gift!
* YHC threw the Pax for a loop when we started to mosey to the pull-up bars and only grabbed just the flag portion of the Shovel Flag. Little did they know I had more Shovel positioned through out the AO. Advantage of leading the capture the flag game.
* The Flag traveled everywhere we did.
* YHC wishes he would have swapped the first round to 7 rounds of 4 exercises. Would have been easier to explain.
* But had to have room for Screwdriver Squats. These are a crowd favorite. (Not really)
* When the Pax completed this session and we moved to the next, you could sense the enthusiasm when I announced 1776 reps.
* It’s music to the Q’s ears when a Pax starts a sentence with “I mean this in the nicest way, but…”
* After 2 rounds and we had dominated the Mountain Climbers YHC decided to audible to S.S.H. Great call. They seemed to be just what the Pax where looking for to wrap up this beat down!
* Even though no one was able to complete all 4 rounds work was done and YHC was proud of the effort.
* T Claps to Boy George for making it the farthest. Completed the squats in round 4.
As always it’s an honor to lead this great group of guys.
Until the next Q…
Meter Maid is out.
