7 pax posted in the gloom for the weekly R.E.D. Friday #beatdown at the Epicenter. After almost a year YHC is finally getting his VQ at this. I am not sure why it has taken so long. RED Friday has always been one of my favorite workouts of the week but I guess I have just let the #HillsAreAlive be my focus. Meter Maid sent me a sheet with options of Hero WOD’s and I looked some up online. I saw ones completed before and many that looked good but I noticed a couple of the pax had come up with there own. I instantly thought of my brother in law and designing one for him. I debated a lot if I should stray from the others but kept coming back to making one for Scott.

It was the middle of the night June 11th 2003. My wife and I were sound asleep when the phone rang at close to 1:00 am. We had a land line still and at that time you are thinking it is just a wrong number. Amy answered the phone anyway. Her Aunt Linda was on the other side. She told Amy to hand me the phone. It was then she told me that Amy’s younger brother Scott had been killed in an accident. I then had to do one of the hardest things I have ever had to do and tell Amy that her little brother had died.

Scott was like many kids growing up. He was trying to find his way but he had found it as a deputy with the Laurens County Sheriffs Department. He had been a certified patrol deputy for 17 months. He loved what he did and had a passion for it. On the night of June 11, 2003, he responded to a call about a fight that broke out at the Laurens County Speedway. He was going to backup another officer when his car lost control and overturned. He would not survive the injuries of this crash. Scott did not have his seatbelt on which was common with officers because they usually have to rush out of their patrol cars and every second counts. Many officers changed their habit from this tragic accident. Joseph “Scott” Quarles was  just 22 years old.

In 2011, Amy and I honored Scott by naming our 3rd and final child Adam Scott Fennell. Crazy thing is he actually looks like him…….

So flash forward to today…….Disclaimer was given.

Outstanding work put in by the pax today. Work was done indeed. My apologies for the WOD extending into overtime. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to share it with you and honor my brother in law.

Personally, it was brutal. I have not felt like I would spill merlot in quite sometime but mile 3 came close. When it is personal, I guess you push yourself a little harder.

#Mumblechatter was limited due to the work being done but encouragement was high as typical of a RED Friday or any F3 Workout.

#tclaps to Woodpecker for getting work in early! #tclaps to Juggernaut for getting it done despite still recovering from a pretty nasty ankle sprain earlier this week. #tclaps to our All American “War Daddy” Baby Blu major respect! #tclaps to Uncle Jesse, Refugee, and Meter Maid as well. You guys push me constantly to be better in much more than a workout.

As the pax were completing the workout, Uncle Jesse said he noticed every time a pax passed another person (not with F3) a kind word was spoken by both parties. Something as simple as good morning or good job to the other non F3 people on the track. He stated if we all did this: black, white, male, female, everybody……this world would be a better place. Those may not be his exact words but you get the point. I could not agree more! My wife always tells my kids “kindness counts”. Just simple kindness and respect sure could go along way in our complicated world.

Thanks again for the opportunity to be your Q today. Always an honor……Aye!
