F3 Greenwood

Two PAX were not afraid to enter the foggy gloom Friday morning and honor one of our fallen heroes for #REDFriday at #Epicenter. Both men remembered to wear red and Remember Everyone Deployed. After all, it’s the least we can do to remind ourselves that there are men and women around the world who have our backs anytime, day or night, anywhere, at home or abroad, and against any enemy, foreign or domestic.

Today we honored U.S. Army Capt. Dan Whitten. Whitten was killed in action in Afghanistan on Feb.2, 2010. YHC had the pleasure of spending some time with Capt. Whitten before he was taken from the world by savage animals whose only concern is dreaming up ways to make people suffer. We had a regular card game at FOB Sweeney. Small game – $20 buy-in Texas Hold ‘Em – and Capt. Whitten would joke about how the game may or may not be strictly acceptable under military code. He did, however, convince us to play a couple of cash games and took a bunch of our money. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. You may have been in the Army, but you were always a sailor inside!

Whitten left behind a 27-year-old widow. That’s far too common these days and it makes my stomach turn and my eyes swell with tears to think of how many families have been torn apart so that I can enjoy the company of my brothers in the gloom. Here is a great story about Whitten, his widow and the impact of losing a service member spouse in the war.

  • Nipples lived up to his new moniker “The Beast.” Meatloaf calls Lite Brite “The Machine” and Nipples “The Beast.” And there is a reason. “We’ve never seen Lite Brite get tired. He’s ‘The Machine.’ We have seen you get tired, Nipples. It doesn’t happen often, but we have seen it. That’s why you’re ‘The Beast.’” #Truth
  • This was one of the toughest Hero WODs we have done. It was a lot of fun. After it was over.
  • #REDFriday is an intense workout, no doubt. But it can be modified just like any other workout. It’s a place where you can come work your butt off and push a little harder because you know the person who died to give the workout its name pushed a little harder for you. As with all F3 workouts – IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU! Plus, you get a great recent history lesson on OEF and what it’s really all about rather than half-baked news stories with an agenda. Hope to see you out there soon!
