NMM:

Leading up to the P200, YHC was struggling with a good bit of lower leg pain. The plan after the race was to take about a month off to let the issue fully heal. Shortly after making that commitment, I was granted the honor of becoming the AOQ for the fountain runs and the Hustle. A little voice quickly emerged saying “you could start running sooner. just take it easy.” I didn’t take much convincing, so here I am writing the back blast for another run—the fourth one I’ve participated in after my early return. But this is really a long-winded way of saying something different.

The team building experience of the P200 meant a lot to me. Being a part of F3 means a lot too. I just took a couple of weeks off, but my absence was a reminder of how joining brothers in the Gloom has become an important part of my weekly routine. That made me think of the other guys who aren’t coming back for various reasons (more serious injury, illness, work obligations, disagreements with other PAX, etc). Life gets crazy and F3 shouldn’t be at the top of anyone’s priority list. There are plenty of reasons not to show up. I get that 100 percent. Still, I know that my time in the Gloom helps bring the real priorities into focus. Maybe it does that for others, I don’t know.

So, what’s the point? If you don’t already do this, please take the time to reach out to PAX that have fallen off the radar for whatever reason (even if they’ve only been absent a short while). They might have a simple reason. But they might be dealing with something they need to talk through. I know from personal experience that it’s far easier to turn inward, or grow distant when things get tough than it is to keep showing up (or remain present).

Bottomline: Reaching out to Missing/Injured PAX will cost you a little bit of time, but it’s well worth it.

For everyone at Starbucks today, great job getting out in the Gloom and getting some work done this morning. See you all tomorrow.

Until then, enjoy some hipster tunes:
