RED Friday is an opportunity to remember those men and women of our Armed Forces who are currently deployed and/or to Honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. Today I honored my friend and fellow Soldier, Matthew V. Dillon “Matty”. I had the honor of deploying and fighting beside then Specialist Dillon with the 122nd Engineer Battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003-2004. He was injured during this deployment when an IED struck his vehicle while on patrol one day, but all members of his crew survived, and eventually returned home safely from this tour in 2004.
In 2005 Matt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated from Marine Boot Camp, Marine Combat Training School, and Military Police school and was assigned to Marine Air Wing Unit MWSS 373, Miramar, California. Due to his outstanding service record and professionalism, Matt was promoted to the Non-Commissioned Officer rank of Corporal in just 16 months. In 2006, Matt was again deployed to Iraq with MWSS 373, serving as a MP fire team leader for Havoc II.
On December 11, 2006, Matthew “Matty” Dillon was killed in action as he and Havoc II were conducting a combat mission in the Anbar Province of Iraq, when their Humvee was struck by a large IED. Along with Cpl Dillon, Lcpl Clinton Miller and Lcpl Budd Cote were killed instantly.
Matthew was a great friend, family man, and Soldier who exhibited a zest for life and love for his country that was beyond compare. RIP my friend! Love ya!
